Diagnostic Imaging

24/7 Emergency Services, Acute to Specialized CareRural Health Clinic, Rehabilitation, Diagnostic & Imaging, and Long-Term Care in Lone Pine, California

Our Imaging Services Department is 100% digital, offering a broad array of diagnostic testing from routine radiography to computed tomography, and ultrasound.  Because we are all digital, we can see and share your imaging pictures with your physician as soon as they are taken via our Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS.) For those physicians not on our computer network, we can easily transfer your pictures to a CD so your doctor can see your images in his/her office. We also utilize PowerShare to send images to ordering providers across the region.

Comprehensive Imaging Services

Our Diagnostic Imaging Department provides the following services:

Radiography (X-Ray)

Digital X-rays capture high-resolution images of bones and soft tissues, including the chest, abdomen, and extremities. This versatile imaging tool is used for assessing fractures, infections, and various chest conditions, offering a rapid and effective way to visualize the internal structures of the body.

Sonography (Ultrasound)

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of soft tissues and organs, including the liver, gallbladder, and kidneys. It’s commonly used for abdominal and pelvic assessments, as well as obstetric care, allowing for detailed imaging and measurement of the developing fetus during pregnancy.

Computed Tomography (CT) Scan

Our state-of-the-art CT scanner captures high-resolution images of the head, chest, abdomen, and extremities in mere seconds, helping physicians detect and diagnose conditions with precision. CT scans are often used in emergencies due to their speed and detailed imaging capabilities.

Cardiac Evaluations (Echocardiography and EKG)

Our echocardiography services use ultrasound to visualize the heart’s structure and function, assessing conditions like valve disorders, heart failure, and congenital abnormalities. Electrocardiograms (EKG) monitor heart rhythm, allowing physicians to diagnose arrhythmias and other heart conditions.

Expert Care and Advanced Technology

Our team includes Registered and State Licensed Technologists with advanced certifications, ensuring each examination is conducted with professionalism and expertise. After the imaging is completed, a Board Certified, Licensed Radiologist reviews your results to provide a comprehensive report for your physician. This combination of advanced imaging technology and specialized care allows Southern Inyo Hospital to offer high-quality diagnostic services tailored to each patient’s needs.

Diagnostic Imaging Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How should I prepare for my imaging exam?

Preparation for imaging exams varies depending on the type of test:
• Radiography (X-ray): Generally requires no special preparation. You may be asked to remove jewelry or wear a gown to ensure clear imaging.
• Sonography (Ultrasound): Depending on the exam, you may need to have a full bladder (for pelvic ultrasounds) or fast for several hours (for abdominal ultrasounds).
• Computed Tomography (CT or CAT Scan): You might need to fast, especially if contrast dye is used. Specific instructions will be provided beforehand.
• Cardiac Evaluations (Echocardiography and EKG): Usually, no preparation is required for EKGs. For echocardiograms, avoid caffeine and heavy meals before the test. Always follow the specific instructions given by the hospital or your healthcare provider.

What types of diagnostic imaging are available?

We offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging services, including:
• Radiography (X-Ray): For evaluating bones, chest, and other areas for fractures, infections, or other conditions.
• Sonography (Ultrasound): Uses sound waves to visualize organs, blood flow, and tissues, often used for pregnancy or abdominal conditions.
• Computed Tomography (CT or CAT Scan): Provides detailed cross-sectional images of the body for diagnosing conditions in the chest, abdomen, or brain. Cardiac Evaluations:
• Echocardiography: Uses ultrasound to assess the structure and function of the heart.
• Electrocardiogram (EKG): Measures electrical activity of the heart to detect irregular rhythms or heart conditions.

How long does it take to get results from diagnostic imaging?

The timeline for results depends on the imaging type:
• X-rays and EKGs: Results are often available the same day.
• Ultrasound and Echocardiography: Typically reviewed within 24-48 hours.
• CT Scans: May take 1-3 days for detailed analysis, especially if contrast is used. Your healthcare provider will discuss the results with you as soon as they are available.

Can I undergo an imaging procedure if Im pregnant?

Yes, but it depends on the type of imaging:
• Ultrasound and Echocardiography: Safe during pregnancy, as they dont use ionizing radiation.
• X-rays and CT Scans: These use ionizing radiation and are generally avoided during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. If needed, precautions such as lead shielding are used to minimize exposure. Always inform your healthcare provider and the imaging staff if you are pregnant or suspect you might be.

Do I need a referral for diagnostic imaging tests?

Yes, in most cases, a referral from your healthcare provider is required. This ensures the appropriate test is ordered based on your medical condition and insurance coverage is verified. However, some services, like routine ultrasounds, may not always need a referral. Check with the hospital or your provider to confirm.
